Ankle Boots

The ankle boot of the late 1800s made a comeback in 1961 and was worn with jeans or pants. Boots became universal in 1962 and, in 1963, they went thighhigh-though they were "neither a fetish nor waterproof," the Manufacturers' Association warned.
Women came into the 1900s wearing boots. Lower class women wore ankle length boots that laced severely up the front. Stout, everyday boots were made in leather. Upper class women wore luxurious, glossy glace kid boots. In the late 1950s, shoes began to creep up the ankle again. Throughout the period shoes were flat, hut toe shapes varied from rounded to very pointed. Ankle boots sometimes predominated, while at other times shoes were favoured; style seems to have varied regionally as well. Woman Casual Ankle Boots

By the middle of the century, heels had returned and the close-fitting, highbuttoned boot became the predominant fashion. J. Sparkes Hall, bootmaker to Queen Victoria, invented the elastic gusseted boot in 1837.

Ankle boots, already back in fashion in the 1950s, remained at the forefront of men's fashionable footwear in the 1960s. The simple but stylish Chelsea boot with elastic sides, first produced in the late 1950s and initially regarded as rather Bohemian, sold in large numbers.
