Women
came into the 1900s wearing boots. Lower
class women wore ankle length boots that
laced severely up the front. Stout,
everyday boots were made in leather.
Upper class women wore luxurious,
glossy glace kid boots. In the late
1950s, shoes began to creep up the ankle
again. Throughout the period shoes
were flat, hut toe shapes varied from
rounded to very pointed. Ankle boots
sometimes predominated, while at other
times shoes were favoured; style seems
to have varied regionally as well. Woman

| When the style was extended up to the ankle to create little boots, both effects were even more
pronounced. By the middle of the century, heels had returned and the close-fitting, highbuttoned
boot became the predominant fashion. J. Sparkes Hall, bootmaker to Queen Victoria, invented the
elastic gusseted boot in 1837.
Ankle boots, already back in fashion in the 1950s, remained at the forefront of men's
fashionable footwear in the 1960s. The simple but stylish Chelsea boot with elastic sides, first
produced in the late 1950s and initially regarded as rather Bohemian, sold in large numbers.

moved on fast, especially in Britain. the female ankle. In an era when
womanhood was put on a pedestal and yet endlessly hunted after, the crinoline was the ideal garment. Its 'do not touch' exterior was so constantly being
pushed up to expose the woman below that a new fashion in footwear soon evolved.

Boots. Work boots are designed for the job. The hoots of the coalminer or laborer are
rugged and functional. Originally, they were made from the sturdiest leather with thick toecaps
for protection. Later, the toecaps were reinforced with steel.
It returns to fashion from time to time, including a period in the 1970s, and is a direct
descendant of the nineteenth-century elastic-sided boot. The Beatles
popularized the Chelsea boot, and made famous another type of ankle boot with side-zip and Cuban heel, which was
