In the early part of the century some boot styles were remarkably unisex. Both men and women adopted the hightopped Balmoral boot which buttoned to one side. Often known simply as bals, they were made with a galosh, or shoe part, of patent or glace leather, and legs of cloth or matte leather.

Soldiers' boots are also immensely practical footwear. They keep out the mud of the battlefield and help to protect the feet from injury and infection. They also protected the calves of the cavalry man and helped him to control his horse, while the foot soldier, too, drew comfort from the fact that his feet were warm and protected. Early cowboy movies were made in the Eastern States and exaggerated costume styles were based on illustrations in cheap novels and comics, and the cowboy shows of the vaudeville entertainer Buffalo Bill.

Actors, such as Edwin S. Porter, star or the 1903 movie The Great Train Robbery, and Billy Anderson, wore oversized bandannas and heavy chaps of sheepskin or leather, covered with metal studs.
