Dr Klaus Maertens, of Munich, created his famous air-cushioned soles in 1945 because, having broken his foot while skiing, he needed a comfortable sole. He started to produce the sole commercially in 1947 but it was not until 1960 that the Dr Maertens shoes, designed for comfort, evolved into Doc Martens, destined to be used for violence. The mini-skirt burst onto the fashion scene in the mid-1960s, and for the first time a great expanse of female leg was exposed.
