The knee-high boot dominated footwear in the reign of Charles I, and from about the 1620s to the 1690s
it was fashionable for both indoor and outdoor wear. A portrait of about 1618 (School of van Somer), housed !n the Tower of London, shows Charles, then Prince of Wales, wearing white knee boots with turn-down top, a
blunt pointed toe and low heel, in soft, slightly wrinkled-looking leather, with spur and spur leather. This wrinkled look was already much admired, as confirmed by the Return from Parnassus of 1606: 'One that more admires the good wrinkle of a boot, and the curious crincling of a silke stocking', Fashionable boots could be made to look extremely decorative and elegant, and were very costly.
