In the early part of the century, During the First World War, British officers wore calflength riding boots
while the lower ranks wore
ankle length lace-up. men also wore high derby boots which laced up the front. They were also remarkably similar to women's lace up boots of the same period and continued to be popular into the 1930s. There were boots with elastic sides too, but they temporarily went out of fashion in the 1920s. In the last quarter of the century Oxfords and Derbys were the most popular practical lace-ups, and from about 1905 the brogued shoe came into more general use.
