 and their boots had high heels to grip the stirrups. The boots reached the knee and protected the calf from chafing against the horses' f'lanks. Soft leather gave the rider more contact with, and therefore more control over, his horse.
As the momentum of the decade increased, the fashion that emerged as universally appealing was the boot. Short, mid-calf, wide, narrow - it was everywhere.
