A soldier in shoes is only a soldier, but in boots he becomes a warrior," said the Second World War hero General George "Old Blood and Cuts" Patton. Soldiers' boots are also immensely practical footwear. The boot is basically a shoe with a "leg" that rises, at the very least, to the ankle, but which sometimes climbs to the knee and can even extend halfway up the thigh. Its history has always been linked to the military, and in fact the evolution of the boot can be traced right back to the Roman legions.

During the period of the Napoleonic wars the army became more socially visible, and military costume influenced fashionable dress. The Hessian boot (fig. 15), originally associated with the light cavalry, was popular from 1795 until about 1830. Reaching to just below the knee, Hessians were cut with a peak at the front which was decorated by a tassel. Worn with pantaloons, they brought the glamour of military uniform into civil life.
