In town, gentlemen of the 1800s did not need stout walking boots as they rode everywhere, and their
boots had high heels to grip the stirrups. The boots reached the knee and protected the calf from chafing against the horses' f'lanks. Soft leather gave the rider more contact with, and therefore more control over, his horse. Tall boots also protected the rider from mud kicked up by the horse and from the weather. From 1 he 1500s until after the First World War, riding boots were a major indicator of social status in Europe. In the 1600s, gentlemen's riding boots were made of soft leather and elaborately decorated, with patterns cut in the uppers, turnovers of fine lace or intricately sculpted leather, and extra side panels of leather. The tops were sometimes turned down, with a panel of a second color under a scalloped t rim. Mort' often the inside of the boot was a different color.

One type of riding boot has risen to prominence on and off the horse-the cowboy boot. The original cowboys of the mid 1800s wore any type of boot or shoe they could find, but toward the end of the frontier era, they adopted the U.S. trooper's boot. Later, a modified version of the footwear worn by Mexican cowboys, or vaqueros was adopted. For better control in the saddle, the shoe part of the boot fitted tightly. This, and the sloping heel which gripped the stirrup, made them difficult to walk in but excellent for control when riding. After the Civil War, cowboys began to adopt lowheeled, hightopped boots made in a hard, black leather called kip. These were often made by Cerman immigrants who based their designs on Northern European riding boots.

In the 1954 movie The Wild One, Marlon Brando wore heavy, lowheeled bikers' boots, riding boots.
And, like movie cowboys before him, he wore blue jeans with the legs turned up so that the upper part of the boot could be admired. These boots had returned to their functional roots. They were high enough to protect the biker's ankle from the heat of the engine and the exhaust pipe, and they had thick soles to protect the rider's foot, which was often trailed along the road while making a turn. It is notable that Brando's boots did have a solitary adornment-a strap fastened with a buckle across the top of the instep, which was curiously reminiscent of the straps used to secure
