The first work boot to be romanticized was the cowboy boot. The modern concept of the cowboy as the
Western boots working gentleman and hero, honest and true.
The western wear phenomenon cannot be lightly dismissed. It is America's great contribution to twentieth-century dress, first introduced to Parisian halls of fashion by Jacques Fath in 1949, after a visit to Texas, and endlessly recycled. Early western boots had no ornamentation. They evolved from the riding boots of the Mexican vaquero, but, for control in the saddle, the shoe portion was made so tight that walking was difficult and painful. As both boots were made on the same last, they needed breaking in, and there are stories of cowboys standing in troughs of water to soften the leather so that it would take the shape of the foot.
