Women came into the 1900s wearing boots. Lower class women wore
 anklelength boots that laced severely up the front. Stout, everyday boots were made in leather. Upper class women wore luxurious, glossy glace kid boots. Women also wore buttoned boots with kid or cloth legs, scalloped along the buttoned edge. Eighteen-button ladies' boots were still being made in the U. S. as late as 1925, they were difficult to fasten and a button hook was essential to do them up.
They were also remarkably similar to women's boots of the same period and continued to be popular into the 1930s. There were boots with elastic sides too, but they temporarily went out of fashion in the 1920s.

In the early part of the century some boot styles were remarkably unisex. Both men and women adopted the hightopped Balmoral boot which buttoned to one side. Often known simply as bals, they were made with a galosh, or shoe part, of patent or glace leather, and legs of cloth or matte leather. Women's buttoned boots were replaced by Russian boots, which were straight topped, kneehigh leather Wellington boots, with a pointed toe and a Louis heel. In May 1921. The British Shoeman magazine remarked: "The picturesque Russian boots in suede and leather caused quite a sensation at the Grand National meeting."
